Kaira Looro – Children’s House

Organization

The central concept of the children’s house is arranged around three core topics. First: healthcare,
first aid and lodging for children’s and their parents. Second: organization of the staff and medical
storage to supply the patients. Third: space to offer recovery potential, playtime, and family visits.
To organize these three topics, the floorplan is formed like a long, diagonal cutted right-angle.
The entrance is located centrally and is constructed like roofed yard. There patients, visitors or the
staff enters the children’s house. Tied to the entrance is the place for recovery and family visits.
There the children can spend their time, can play and got a direct connection to the outside
garden area. To the right of the entrance, staff members have their space to organize the
paperwork, schedules, and medical storage work. To the left of the entrance the changing rooms,
sanitary and dormitory for children and parents is located.

Inside – Outside

To combine the indoor and outdoor areas of the children’s house, a wave is formed through the
hole building. The first curve forms the outside recovery garden area, where the patients get the
opportunity to relax their minds through the sight out of the wooden door elements. The nature
moves inside the building and supports the mental health recovery. The second curve moves
inside the building and bring out the indoor gaming and meeting spaces from the central
entrance. Children get the possibility to play in and outside. Also, parents and children get the
opportunity to spend their time outside and relax while looking into the nature around the house.

Light, Air and Sight

To reduce the solar impact of the sun, the roof is extended over the main walls of the house.
Through the wooden foldable and rotatable door elements, the dormitory and the community
space are provided by individual sunlight and air supply. The patients have the possibility to use
the door elements autonomously to react to noise, sunlight, air, and weather conditions. At the
same time, the dormitory gets a direct sight to the outside to make the stay more comfortable. To
provide a steadily air supply the roof construction is made from several wooden frameworks,
where air can circulate and reduces the heat in the summer. At the same time a vertical timber
laths are added the outer framework to create interesting light fall to the inside.
