Minimal Shelter Competition – Japan

The minimal shelter is constructed out of a prefabricated wall elements and single solid wood slats. The
wood slats and oriented strand boards get attached locally. The oriented strand boards between the
wood columns secure the bracing of the shelter. For the attachments screws where used to create the
possibility of dismantling the construction afterwards and reuse it. At last used tatami mats where
placed inside the floor framework. The tatami mats create a heightening and are more comfortable than
the gym floor. At the entrance and the wall framework curtains are installed to create more privacy
inside the shelters. At the same time the curtains enable light to come through lightly.
The single wall elements, boards and slats can easily be transported inside classic 40′ – container,
where nearly material for 65-70 shelters can be stored.
Inside the shelter the prefabricated wall can be used to storage personal things and belongings that
were rescued from the natural calamity. It allows the people to personalize their shelters, which make it
easier to stay for a longer time. The tatami mates creates soft foundation and also invites to sit on the
floor of the shelter. The cotton curtains can be raised or not, to create private or public space.
The shelter boxes also can be used in different ways. During a climate calamity the local gym hall is
used as shelter for local people. At the same time places are needed to organize the evacuation, to
serve food or to offer places for the first aid. Through the flexibility of the shelter this different function
can easily adapted to the wooden boxes.
